History

Heritage Christian School was founded in 1965 in East Point, Georgia (formerly Central Christian Schools). When we opened our doors in September, we became the third Christian educational ministry in the
state of Georgia. Beginning with the kindergarten program that year, we soon started adding grade levels that eventually resulted in our very first high school graduating class in May of 1974.

Although Heritage Christian enjoys a proud and successful tradition as one of Georgia’s oldest Christian schools, it still adheres to the basic values and principles which motivated its founding in 1965. God must be at the center of all true education. God’s glory and our joy in knowing Him is the first priority. Every child has been fearfully and wonderfully made in the very image of God. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Nurturing the individual child and assisting families in the education of their children is central to our program.

Since its founding, Heritage Christian has embraced a philosophy of education that is “distinctively Christian, distinctively different.” We believe that all truth is God’s truth. Therefore, all truth must be taught within the concept of “knowing God.” At Heritage, the first priority is always to know God, to glorify Him, and to enjoy Him forever. Within the framework of this basic philosophy, we also stress the importance and the uniqueness of every child. The Psalmist described it this way – “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works: and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalm 139:14). This is why we take our responsibility very seriously.

Dr. Robert E. McCurry, founder of our Christian School, firmly believed that because of the changing beliefs and philosophies of the public school systems,
that included removing prayer from the public schools in the early 60”s, that Christians had to face squarely their responsibility in not only providing a quality education for their children, but providing a quality Christian education for their children. For years Dr. McCurry devoted his vision, talents, and skill, to building what we know today to be Heritage Christian School.

Faculty 1971-72

During the years the school has used three main campuses. The first facility was located on 2 acres at 1130 Cleveland Avenue in East Point, Georgia. This property was purchased in 1958. The building was a modest rectangular structure with a basement consisting of approximately 4,000 square feet. This included the sanctuary of the church. The basement served as Sunday school rooms for the church on Sunday and classrooms for the school during the week. This facility served us well from 1958 until 1967.

Second Campus, Sylvan Road, East Point
In 1965, 4.5 acres of property were purchased at 2560 Sylvan Road, East Point, Georgia for the enlargement of the ministry. New facilities were then built that totaled 17,000 square feet. These facilities were occupied in July of 1968. During the next 20 years, the school enjoyed its greatest growth, becoming not only one of Georgia’s oldest Christian schools, but also one of Georgia’s largest Christian schools, with more than 400 students in grades K-12.

Changing History
During the spring of 1988, 47 acres of property was purchased at 3613 Hwy. 34, in Sharpsburg, Georgia, in Coweta County. This property was approximately 40 miles south of the East Point location. The property

was purchased for approximately $315,000. Facilities were quickly built totaling more than 50,000 square feet. God graciously provided and met all of our needs. As a result, we were able to occupy the facility in October of 1988 debt free. To this day, the facility remains debt free.

The Future
We are excited about the possibilities of the future with a convenient location on Hwy. 34 between Newnan and Peachtree City. Being in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation we are looking forward to expanded opportunities, expanded vision, and expanded expectations of what God will do in our midst.
